Hello everyone. Just wanted to inform you that I tried this product sold at Petsmart. In less than 24 hrs my dog was showing signs of distress, pacing and shaking as if wet, then the scratching began. I called the hotline for the product and they instructed me to wash her with dish soap 3 times to remove the product and use vitamin E to her skin. I usually google products before switching. Heads up, be careful to monitor the dog if you are switching products on your dog. Ally is better today, but still uncomfortable.

The difference between 'store bought' flea remedies is the substance that's used to transmit the flea protection to the body, similar to the gel caps and coatings used in pills.
Frontline and Advantage, the ones that used to be my prescription only, use a safer formula. There have been articles about others and the problems and deaths caused by them.
Glad your dog is better, it's not just Sentry.

I have a chihuhau mix, and I cannot use these over the counter products as she has the same reaction. Burning of the skin, itching, shaking, etc. I have tried several and always had to wash it off right away. I never had this problem before, maybe some animals are more sensitive?

I am battling some very serious health problems and can't have topical poisons on my pets because of the risk to my exposure. Does anyone have experience with the pill type of flea medicine? I know capstars only kill them for 24 hours but there are other pills (flavor-tabs) I've seen on Amazon and eBay that claim to get rid of fleas for a month. Please let me know what your thoughts/experiences are if any. Thank you!

I have been using Comfortis from my vet on two 80# dogs for about a year, and find it very successful. It's administered 1 x month. My vet informed me reccently that there is a product called Trifexis that takes care of fleas and heartworm. Your dogs have to be tested for heartworm before they can take it. Hope this helps.

I second Comfortis. I have two Chihuahuas and a 45 lb dingo style pound dog. We had tried all the topicals and they only worked for a couple of weeks at most, and one of my Chi's is very sensitive to fleas, she was starting to have hair loss from fleas. We tried the Comfortis, which is ingestible, and the fleas were gone in minutes...the two Chi's were sleeping on the couch and I literally found a ring of dead fleas around them! Ever since then, fleas are no longer an issue in our home, it's fantastic! And in fact, I stopped giving it automatically each month, I started waiting until I saw a flea, and then I give another dose as I hate to over-medicate. It works longer and longer, I am getting 3 months a dose now! And my dingo dog lives outside with no fleas! They do tell you to give it with food as it can upset an empty stomach, and I have never had any bad reactions from my dogs. There is no odor or anything, and NO FLEAS!!! It's so wonderful!
The new version, Trifexis, is Comfortis plus heartworm medication in one. I havent tried Trifexis because while I do give them heatworm medicine each month, I only do the flea treatment as needed.
Try it out, Comfortis is the BEST!!!

equisician - you can get Program Lufenuron in an injectable form from your vet that lasts 6 months. Keep in mind Program is not an insecticide, it is an insect growth regulator - breaks the reproduction cycle but does not kill adult fleas. I mention it because of your health issues. Unfortunately, if you have an infestation, you will still need to get rid of the adults in another way. If you take your pet to the vet to be injected - they could administer a Capstar pill at the same time and keep your pet for 24 hours until he/she stops secreting the insecticide. Then, you'd just have to worry about the animal's sleeping quarters/premises. If you threw out the dog bed at the same time and got all new bedding (or washed in super hot water or used a steam cleaner), you might be able to avoid exposing yourself to insecticides altogether and still bring the flea problem under control.
