Our homeowners policy held with a company that we've been with for 20 years would like to DOUBLE our premium paid to them.

Are we the only ones with our heads spinning on this subject?

We're forking out for another wind mitigation inspection-----we did this only a few years ago already.  Somethings starting to smell around here and it ain't the manure pile either.  Its a funny thing as I don't have double the house nor double the value.  Horse $$!!! if you know what I mean.   Angry

we just got a letter from our insurance company. Stating that sinkhole coverage will increase  due to increased rates .
and they will no longer provide coverage, for certain carports,screened enclosures,patios and awnings and certain other structures that are to be open to the weather,whether attached to the home or not.
  I think that your wind mitigation should be good for 5 years..
   I really despise the insurance companies....

You can also thank your inspectors who signed off on mitigation forms fraudulently.  They never verified products installed, permits pulled, legally required inspections obtained.  For $100 they'd give a quick look and sign off.  If the products were installed without permits and inspections, there's no way to verify that they were code compliant and installed properly.  An audit showed that many, many of the houses which were given mitigation s did not meet the minimum code requirements. 

And screen enclosures?  Bad engineering, bad installation, which came to light when they failed in "minor" winds (Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma).  How many engineers and contractors were disciplined or had to pay fines?  Hmmm . . . but now the homeowners have to pay the price in higher premiums, and loss of coverage.

In 20 years we made one claim.  So I chucked up $125 for the 'wind inspector' and now need to do 2 small things and would you believe I'll have to chuck another $50 for another inspection. 

I know someone in WPB whose insurance is now wanting $8 grand a yr.  Eight grand for a home worth maybe $100,00.  Of course they paid 4 times that but thats beside the point in this market.   Part of the problem is if you have a mortgage - you basically are being held up legally in a manner of speaking.  Pay it or else.  Insurance agents will soon be wearing hold up masks.  Or they should be required to do so.  If yours has been unaffected so far,  just wait till its due again..................

I know I'm going to hate myself for asking this.  Joyce, is sink hole coverage part of a standard policy.  I know they can happen but thats about all I know about them.  I associate them with underground main plumbing line problems in the city.  (gulp)

i think that the sinkhole coverage is optional. Our letter states that    IF YOU HAVE SINHOLE LOSS COVRAGE. so I guess it actually depends on the actual coverage,which i am gonna go check mine.
 When we had our mitigation done, it was done by the insurance company's person of choice,even though we had to pay,then a few weeks after that the insurance company sent out another person to verify the work of the first guy. They paid for the 2ND guy to come out. and verify the first guy,, Weird huh .
  we do have sinkhole coverage it costs $3.00 for the year.It is listed under other coverages.

  We paid for our new roof out of pocket,so we would not be cancelled or have or rates increased, silly me had I know better I would have had the insurance company pay ... in the end we consumers pay anyway.

Just google State Farm triple digit insurance rate in the sun sentinel from Aug. 24., and then you'll find a whole array of articles etc since then too.  oh my, what's it all coming to
But perhaps more of us should have farm policies anyway for better protection with liability and our horses.  It just looks like they want our money for free.  It's a racket.

Now I'm with AAA (as in the auto club) and switched my house and car and saved a few thousand off the original premiums. I gave my guy's name to my neighbors, and they switched too, and saved even more. (And I have dogs and horses as well.) Try contacting Wayne Kinser at AAA and see if he cane help - I have no affiliation with him or the company, just trying to save us little guys some big $$$$. Email him at wkinser@aaasouth.com. (He has horses too.)

Thanks for sharing this info..  Is he with the AAA office located on the corner of 441 and Lake Worth Road?  It was suggested to me that I contact that office for our auto insurance as well and I'm just wondering if it could be the same person.

We heard some good things too about AAA.  Allstate dropped my friends a long while back,  I didn't think too too much about it since it didn't affect me, then.... yet when I was getting estimates recently one Allstate rep was my #1 persistent salesman - its anybodies guess how this stuff works.  Why would they drop one home like Champers and then seem all  interested in another?  Its like their playing some law of averages game with our homes.
 
You have to shop around so your not paying more than the folks who own the REAL big homes that are actually worth WAY more than yours is.  Loyalty to one company is of the bygone era now. 

If you received holiday wishes from your agent this past year and thanks for your loyalty kind of cards- look out for the increase that is coming.

I read this post withn interest but didn't think further until, sure enough my updated policy came through and it was nearly double! A friend referred Peter Boykin, 561-422-7071 in Royal Palm. He was all over it and actually found me a new policy at less that I was paying before the increase.  Anyone having problems, give him a buzz. He saved me a few hundred on my car insurance too.

Yes, Wayne will handle properties with boarders. He asked all the right questions when he came out and looked over my property. I switched my car insurance over, along with the homeowners. My new premium is quite a few thousand less than what I used to pay originally.

I just hope that this doesn't become a yearly ritual of MUSICAL insurance companies.  I mentioned the horses to one agent who will write the policy but not including the horses.  I can understand that as I've heard of this,  but to drop someone because of 2 German shepherds?  Sigh"...   Will they just not insure if they bite someone or are they dropping your whole policy - gulp.

we were dropped many years ago because we had  a German Shepard,a liability for the insurance company.
 just got our renewal policy the sink hole debate.
 If we have a sink hole our out of pocket deductable will be $2500. before the policy kicks in,
 What a racket they have.

there is a broker named steven raymond  (cell 561-577-4111) that helped me after the 3 hurricanes and is trying to help now that current company is substantially increasing rate. 

he works for dunham insurance in pbg (561-694-0185).

many people don't know that if you are military or a direct relative is military or was military( such as father or mother) you can join USAA  which is owned by the policy holders. they do all of my insurance as my father was ex-army, and there prices are resonable, I had one claim after a hurricane, they paid no problem and did not raise my rates. Its worth a try if u qualify.

Don't hold you breath with USAA , they raised my rates 30% last year and have already warned me of further increases at my Feb 2013 renewal. I have never had a claim - hurricane or otherwise. It's disturbing.
