FDA warns against Chicken Jerky treats .... Dog can be ill or die ....

WASHINGTON -- Dog lovers listen up: the Food and Drug Administration is once again warning about products imported from China. This time the FDA is cautioning consumers about chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or treats.

In September 2007 and December 2008, reports surfaced of dogs getting sick after eating products from China. The number of complaints dropped off in the second half of 2009 and through most of 2010.

The FDA is seeing a rise in the number of complaints from dogs owners and veterinarians once again. Some dogs have died, but most dogs do recover.

The FDA says if you do feed your dog these chicken jerky treats, keep a watchful eye on them to make sure you don't see a decrease in appetite or activity. Also look out for vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, an increase in urination or thirst. These symptoms can take hours or even days to develop. If they do, immediately stop feeding the chicken jerky product and call your veterinarian right away.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about chicken jerky for dogs, saying some products imported from China may be associated with 70 reports of dogs who became ill or died.  That number is up from 54 reports last year, the agency indicated.
The FDA has not determined that the jerky definitely caused any of the illnesses and hasn’t identified a specific cause, despite testing a number of different products for potential contamination.  The agency has no plans to issue any recalls and is continuing to test different types of treats, and testing is ongoing.  The FDA could provide no brand names of products that are being tested.
Dog owners who feed their pets these types of treats should monitor them for signs of serious illness, including decreased appetite, a lower level of activity, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), increased water intake or increased urination.
Chicken jerky products, sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats originally came to the FDA’s attention in late 2007 after 156 dogs became ill, and they issued a preliminary warning in 2008.  The number of reported illnesses dropped off in 2009 and 2010 but increased over the past year, prompting the latest warning.
Officials said the upswing in cases is probably due to increased publicity after Canada issued a similar warning earlier this year since dog owners and veterinarians are more likely to report illnesses after information becomes public.

All of them. Dogswell, Waggin Train, Milo's, etc etc etc. look for tiny writing on the bag, side of bag, or other strange location that is not easy to read or find on the bag.

The only chicken jerky I know of that is made in USA is Aunt Jeni's. There might be a few others, but it's rare.

Anything MADE IN CHINA.... Do not feed to your dogs or allow your little children to play with

Once again THANKS JILL and the WEF board!   My Jack Russell had a close call and recent overnight at an emergency clinic.   They sent him home not knowing what caused it.   I saw your post I checked the pantry... sure enough "made in China"   I can't believe his treats could have been killing him.   Thank you thank you thank you!

So glad it helped you.  My JRT had bad diareah and then I saw this report ... And looked at his Duck jerky treats I had just bought him .... Would have poisoned him if I had not seen this!


I also was shopping in Publix today .... The jerky treats, all labeled Milos Kitchen, some made in USA some in CHINA .... You have to look!  You would think if they made one here they would make them all here... Not true.  Spread the word...

OMG thanks for the info! Whew!  two of my dogs have had these same symtoms - no more bull from China!
