We all know that you are overwhelmed with cats so we came in and adopted Larry the adult cat who had been there the longest.   He is wonderful and living proof that you guys are doing a great job.   It has to be heartwrenching doing what you do.   Please know that you are appreciated!  Oh, and for the record... I still need a barn cat.  Larry seems to be fond of sleeping on my head at night.    I don't see him venturing out to the barn anytime soon : )

Barn Cat, Barn Cat  mine may have started out that way and performed well for a time;  however I think that the air conditioned house and my comfy mattress supercede what the barn has to offer.

Any advice on how to keep the barn cat a BARN CAT?

We have 8 cats.  Five of them are barn cats and 3 were colony cats who have taken over our garage.
Our barn cats are all rescues.  None of them have been invited to the house.  In my opinion, they have the best of all worlds -- a food and health program, free time activities for lizard chasing, climbing trees, fishing at the pond, etc., and guaranteed shelter from heat, storms, and most things that could be dangerous to them.  They are fed canned food at night and "crated" in the tackroom porch area for their own safety.  If I were to come back as a cat, I'd love being one of my barn cats.

The colony cats have all the same privileges, but are claustrophobic so the garage door is always open just enough for their "ins and outs."

All  cats have been altered.

Hi Kim, its Adriana! I'm coming out Wed night to ride - let's talk about your barn cat needs, we might have some kittens in the neighborhood that would work!
XOXO :-)

AWESOME!     I know its a rough life so I will gladly take an older experienced outdoor cat that is desperately seeking a home as long as it is altered BEFORE it moves in.   It has to be a cat that has survival skills because of the neighbors dogs.    If it wanders next door it better be able to get up a tree fast.  Also, I can not let them in the house even for surgery recovery period.   I have an elderly house cat and the addition of Larry nearly did him in!

Barn cats have a great life! They have shelter food and health care! I adopted 12 and they keep my barn free of mice.... Cats love to hunt at night... I would never lock them up .... I would be leary of leaving garage door open ,have heard horror stories of doors closing on cats! All my cats live outside and have access to feed room with ceiling fans and fresh mixed food 2 times a day...they get dewormed and flea drops once a month....

Just wanted to add a "Thank you" to ACC too. I could not do what you do. My dogs and cats are all rescues, they know what it is like to do with out and I think they appreciate all that they have. Thanks again.

I agree too; no way could I work there, I'm a hysterical crying mess just visiting.  Cry

Our kitty is a rescue from the hurricanes we had here a few years ago.  She was brought to the barn to be a barn cat but wound up driving the long time resident barn cat away, so she needed to find another home.  Enter my stray cat magnet daughter and the rest as they say is history.  Wink  At first our kitty wanted nothing to do with being inside whatsoever; however, the tides have apparently turned.  Now she is inside sleeping on my daughter's bed and hanging out with her ("all up in my stuff" as my daughter says) all day/evening until she's struck by that urge to go out NOW - then she comes up to the first one of us she can find and gives out with 1 very authoritative "MEOW!" which is her signal for you to immediately stop whatever it is you are doing and go to the front door to let her prance out.

Yes those strays really know how to train their people well.  Grin
