I to used Perry, he did an okay job but felt he rushed thru to get it done. Did not take the time to pack the dirt down, rolled over it quick and called it the day... did not clean up debris. His work is not holding up as well as I had hoped

How much “extra” shavings does it require for those “extra” 6 hours in the stall as opposed to being out in the paddock? Who is responsible for cleaning up the poop from your paddocks which would normally be there in dry cirstances? Is that not a trade off?
If there is a trade off I'm not sure this is a fair one. There is no urine to clean in the paddocks and the manure and urine does nor get trampled in the pasture like it does in a 12x13 stall filled with shavings. I clean my stalls a minimum of 3 times a day, this will save shavings and help minimize the fly population.
Why are you giving the horses more hay for those additional 6 hours in the stall? Are you substituting hay for the grass they would normally be eating while grazing? Who is responsible for re-seeding and maintaining your paddocks in dry circ.umstances? Isn’t the no grazing/more hay a trade off?
The horses are given hay to keep them busy, the same way the grass keep them busy in the paddocks. The maintenance of the paddocks might be higher no grazing more mowing (when dry enough).
I would also hope that since the horses are not getting any turn out now you would be cutting back on their grain since you don’t want the horses getting “hot” without any way to get any physical exercise to work off their energy. Reduced grain/increased hay - isn’t that a trade off?
Horses have been kept on the same amount of feed. Maybe a mistake by me.
You say “It has been my decision not to use the paddocks”, thus your boarders are being denied a benefit of their board, namely individual turnout in grassy paddocks and the ability of their horses to get out of their stalls and get some exercise and work off some energy. Is that not another trade off?
A 1.5 acre pasture was made available for all boarders. All but one has chosen NOT to use it. Horses that are not use to that much space might behave like idiots!!! This might not be the time to see how your horse will behave in a 1.5 acre pasture with wet slippery grass......An alternate riding ring was also made available to the boarders.
I believe the bottom line is that it’s the cost of doing business, especially when there is a FEMA claim being made for compensation to the barn owner for their losses.
There is no claim to FEMA for the barn, it stayed nice and dry. The FEMA claim (if we get declared a State of emergency) is for my home that was flooded with 3 inch of water, damage to pumps and water systems.
Personally, I would speak to each client individually and find out if they want their horse given more hay, and if they do then decide how to split the cost of that. Find out if they want more shavings added to their bedding since their horse will not be going to turn out, and if they do want “extra” shavings decide how to split the cost of that. It is not a clear cut black or white, you or me, situation that dictates who should pick up the tab; cooperation and consideration is the key.
Good point!

One of my friends had over a foot of water in the stalls, lost all hay and feed. For those of you that suffered financial loss please call FEMA, they will ask for your address, phone number and what kind of damages you had. This will all be recorded to determine if the Governor will declare an state of emergency. 712-6400 ask to be connected to FEMA.

HSCP, so sorry to hear you have such inconsiderate barn owner to deal with, maybe it would be a good time to go.... I would not consider asking for anything else then the extra cost of shavings and hay to keep the horses content inside 24/7 due to the paddocks not being usable. It has been my decision not to use the paddocks due to the stagnet water and the of the risk of having injured horses getting stuck in the mud, cuts that very easy can get infected by the water. Would not charge any extra for my labor but it seems like it would be nice if the boarders would help pay for the extra expenses.

This might be a bit of a touchy subject but I would like to get some input from other boarders and barn owners. The farm got hit hard with the flood from Isaac, barn stayed nice and dry but all paddocks was completely under water for more than a week. Still two weeks after the storm only a couple of the paddocks are usable. Here is the tricky part, should it be the barn owner or the boarders that pickup the extra expenses, as shavings, hay, manure pick-up due to horses being inside 24/7 instead of being turned-out 6 hours a day? Please give me your input, it will be much appreciated.

I bought a house in Loxahatchee about 1 year ago, had the septic emptied before we moved in. Today after several days of heavy rain my toilets are making bubbly noises and the shower are not draining. Is there a quick fix or do I need a professional out?
