General Horse Information / Horse Information / Re: Storm Preparation
|
on: September 29, 2010, 06:47:13 PM

Hi Ingrid----are you asking about being prepared for a storm in case you have to trailor horses out of here? Or just the storms like what we are experiencing now? But when it gets so mucky outside and the rain has created pools in my yard and pastures-----it is nice to make sure I have all of my supplies ---horse food and hay---not fun getting supplies in the rain. When everything is such a mess outside, I tend to want to make sure the horses have a little more hay than usual because my guys don't like to graze in the rain. They have access to their pastures 24/7 from their stalls. And I guess I get a little funny about making sure everything is extra neat and tidy ---so that it feels cozy inside for the horses---ha---cozy for me There isn't really an absolute do or don't here, but this makes it easy for me to weather this storm

When my horses were up north for the winter, I would put a lot of water in their food (pellets). Maybe this horse doesn't like FL well water. Do a test and give him a choice of filtered (bottled water that a person would drink) water in his bucket and a bucket of water the horse would get in his stall----I add some small amounts of salt (whatever variance of salt) in his food---is he eating?

As for the mane---maybe some hair extensions? I am serious---My boy's mane--which is super long-- has a section that was literally rubbed "gone" from his winter coat---he was up north for the winter and had a coat on 24/7. Anyway---it has grown in some, but now I am still waiting for that part of his mane to (ha!) catch up to the rest-- Do you have Frisians?

Well---speaking of suddenly eating something weird---she is far from pregnant but ate about 6 bananas growing on our property---stallion would not have a thing to do with them---maybe that is normal for horses to like bananas---whatever---thank you for your input and about the well water...

Very good---I already give my horses Seminole and their loose minerals now----no one is pregnant yet---plus the mare is in perfect weight----thank you so much for the info---any thoughts on the well water---when do mares stop being able to get pregnant? I have heard from 18 to 23? Does the type of horse make a difference--an Arab from a TB? Thanks for your time on this.

Ti's time for the vet--oh yes--but those stinken flies---I had a friend whose horse had to be in a stall 24/7 when the flies or gnats chewed on him---this horse would itch all of his hair off . And the stall had to be screened in from any bugs---takes all the fun out of having a horse. And another friend of mine---her young stud would destroy his mane and have bumps and missing hair all over him from the bugs--you would think there would be some antihistamine for horses for this---maybe there is....

Yes--thanks--that does help--where do you buy it? Do you think it is (nutrition wise and roughage) the best hay for horses? And excuse the ignorance---why is it called peanut hay? Alfalfa hay is fronm alfalfa--timothy hay---coastal---peanut hay--from peanuts Nay, nay---but what is this hay?

What or is there a special feed made just for pregnant mares? If not--what is the best feed for them? And what nutrients are more important when they are pregnant? I know women need to make sure they take extra folic acid (B Vitamin)---just curious what a mare might need. Increase the amount of feed and hay? What should be their exercise routine? Say you ride your mare a lot before pregnancy and she is in great shape---what do you continue and when do you discontinue? Oh-- and what about the kind of drinking water to give---is this well water with all of the smell and sediments good for a pregnant mare?

I know it first mentions cardio-disease, but check this out about well water and a bacteria that could be present to cause ulcers---I didn't really read it thoroughly -- was trying to find out some info that is going on with well water talk ---when you open it up, go to the topics underneath the first article--it sounds like a shot in the dark but worth a peek...

That sounds like a recipe for one happy, healthy horsed---- quite a mystery as to his ulcers. 2 thoughts--- had a friend whose horse got ulcers --she said-- from Banamine -- ---had bouts of colic and was a show horse. I just read an article on getting ulcers from drinking well water---a particular bacteria in the well water--- this was about ulcers in humans.

Awesome info and advice from others---you mentioned he is an Arab---have 2 myself---mare and a stallion. They are such amazing horses--sensitive and smart--and can be flighty if owner isn't on top of their sometimes over active "somebody is going to eat me" moments. As far as your boy's demeanor--his he supper calm or flighty? Do you have other horses or better yet---does he have a buddy? You mentioned he has his own paddock. I just know horses love to graze with their buddies in sight. Just curious to the outside stimulations, because it seems everything under the sun is being done for his stomach---and I would give that boy alfalfa hay and cubes and ration out his food----I do that for my horses and they are easy keepers--what was mentioned in the other comments about the stomach acid constantly being produced is true ---so his continuous grazing and munching on hay is great just like you said he does--and let me add this ---5 months ago, my horses were trailored for 2 days ---but my boy did not want his pellets after arriving, but did eat his hay---normal for horses after that kind of stress---and I am sure his stomach was doing a number. The mare ate her pellets --- nothing bothered her even after that haul. So I added water to my stallion's food and he ate it all---for what it is worth---maybe the water buffered his upset stomach---I thought it was interesting ---food for thought.

Wow---a lot of response to the hay! Maybe to close this issue---bottom line---I have moved here a few months ago from NY--use to get $5 a bale-- gorgeous hay from Canada. I was told about the expense of hay down here in FL---I also lived in SC, so I know it can be priced high. But----I have been searching high and low for a least some good for some peace of mind price---and this hay from Sandy fits the bill. I can give less hay and cut back on feed because of the quality of this hay and it is the cheapest hay I have bought---- plus, they deliver it to your door and I only ordered 8 bales.

That is funny hearing this because I just bought 8 bales and can't thank God enough for finally getting gooooood hay!!! And I had to call some, but it is because they are in such great demand. The hay is so worth my few phone calls----gorgeous hay and you can cut back on the feed because it is great hay. I would say there is a good amount of alfalfa in the hay which is great for the horses. And they are very nice people and pulled their big rig right to my place---no extra charge for delivering. They are here till Wed., so give them a call!!

There is so much variety of good grain and everybodies suggestions are obviously working for their horses. I agree with the Seminole advice---nutrient packed----give my horses that brand plus Purina has great nutrient packed grains. The complex carbs are what is also important---watching that starch----and the good advice to give feeding our horses we should also follow. I personally think that giving the horse smaller amounts of grain at a time so they will digest what they eat is important. But I wouldn't lower the grain intake per day, unless a horse is being overfed on grain.

I buy plain (Morton) salt blocks----leave it in a bucket in their stalls for them to lick it when they want-----I even put maybe 1/2 a tablespoon in their food with the amount of sweating they can do by just being out grazing in the sun.
