I saw an advertisement for coffee plants a while back.. saying what a lovely hedge they make.. unfortunately that plant is toxic as well, so not suitable for hedging for anybody with horses....

Guys.. There is no round bales Tifton bales available right now.. Ranch Feed has not had any for 5 weeks now, I am guessing their supplier is out of inventory and won't have any more until they start cutting again (usually May/June) depending on how the weather goes... Dr. Gesoff sells squares that are beautiful.. but not rounds.

Not sure if you all know about this monthly lecture series at Whole Foods in Wellington. The next one is this Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Guest speakers are Dr. Beverly Gordon, who will be discussing Equi-Tape and Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt, author and massage therapist.
Seating is limited, there is a nomal fee of $5/per person and a reservation is required by calling service desk at 561 904 4000.
I really enjoyed the first session, so I am passing on the information. Mary Ann Simonds is hosting this series... well worth attending... as it is a great opportunity to get exposure to the various components of the equine industry through the guest speakers.

Forget why you walked into the room? Blame the door, say psychologists By Pat Hagan .. Psychologists have discovered the so-called 'senior moments' that can leave us utterly bemused may actually be caused by the way the brain processes information as the body leaves one room and enters another. (Posed by model) We've all walked into a room only to find that the reason for doing so has suddenly and entirely vanished from our mind.
Psychologists have discovered the so-called ‘senior moments’ that can leave us utterly bemused and retracing our steps may actually be caused by the way the brain processes information as the body leaves one room and enters another.
It appears the mind regards a doorway as something experts call an ‘event boundary’, signalling the end of one memory episode and the beginning of another. Psychologists found the brain tends to file away events and memories from one room as soon as it exits into another, storing information in successive chapters or episodes. The latest research, published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, shows doorways act as a kind of trigger for the brain to file one chapter and move on to the next one. A U.S. team of researchers at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana came up with the findings after an experiment where volunteers used computer keys to navigate their way through 55 ‘virtual’ rooms, large and small.
Each room contained one or two tables, with objects that the volunteers had to pick up, carry to the next room and set down on a table again. As soon as they picked them up, the objects disappeared. Throughout the test, they were presented with the name of an object and asked if it was the one they were currently carrying, or the one they had already put down.
The results showed memory performance dipped markedly once they had passed through a doorway, rather than when they covered the same distance but remained in the same room.
To confirm the findings in real life, rather than on a computer, the team set up a similar environment of rooms and tables – hiding the objects in boxes the volunteers carried.
Again, the researchers found participants were more likely to forget what they had in the box once they walked through a door into the next room.
In a report on their findings, researchers said that moving into a new environment probably clutters the brain’s working memory, so that it cannot recall the original reason for entering a room.
The report stated that the extra information ‘overloads and adds more and more information to the working memory’

Polomare.
I love peat moss as well.. don't use it to the extend that you do... but I do have to say the amount of peat moss you use versus shavings is not even worth discussion.. since you hardly use any at all... double the price on peat moss or a product that acts similar to peat moss (like the corn cobb stuff) is still well below the money you spend on shavings...And to add into the formula, you don't have to have your peat moss picked up and disposed.. you can just spread it around which also represents a signficant savings....
One of the places the corn cobb stuff can be bought is out of Pennsylvania!! Maybe you can poke around and see if anybody will bring a pallet full down for you this coming season!! OR .. maybe try the youship site... if you are not in a hurry to get it, you probably will find a great quote as a tag along to somebody else having stuff shipped down...
If there is a will, there is a way!!!
Just my two cents worth (or four)
Atlas Peat Moss on 441 is not a good option for peat any more???

From The Palm Beach Post:
SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH — A second case of rabies has been confirmed in Palm Beach County after another raccoon attacked a dog.
A Yorkie was attacked Saturday in a neighborhood east of Jog Road between Belvedere and Southern boulevards by a raccoon that was rabid, the Florida State Lab confirmed, according to a statement released by a Palm Beach County Health Department spokesman.
The dog’s owner was walking the 1-year-old Yorkie named Lola when the raccoon attacked. A neighbor helped the owner and separated the animals and killed the raccoon. Lola was treated by a local veterinarian and will be confined to her home for 45 days as a precaution.
The dog was up to date with her rabies vaccines, the statement says.
The county health department is investigating if there was any human exposure to the disease.
Rabies is a disease that attacks the nervous system and can be fatal to humans and warm-blooded animals.
Meanwhile, the health department is reminding residents that all pets should be vaccinated against rabies and to avoid allowing pets to come into contact with wild animals.
Another rabid raccoon attacked a dog on Caloosa Boulevard near Bee Line Highway in suburban Palm Beach Gardens last Thursday. The raccoon was killed and the dog was treated by a local veterinarian. That dog did not have his rabies vaccine before the attack and was later given a rabies booster shot and antibiotics.
The 65-pound dog, named Champ, will remain in “strict quarantine” for 180 days.

From The Horsedotc.o.m.
Flood of Equine Encephalitis Cases Follow Hurricane Isaac by: Stacey Oke, DVM, MSc September 14 2012, Article # 20639
State mosquito populations are flourishing in pools of stagnant water left in the wake of Isaac. The result is an "inordinate amount of equine deaths attributed to encephalitis," says Louisiana’s Assistant State Veterinarian Diane Stacy, DVM.
Stacy's office has been flooded with calls reporting horses with neurologic signs and "downer" horses, which can be clinical signs of West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). Both EEE and WNV are spread by mosquitoes. "As of today (September 11, 2012) we have had 42 confirmed cases of West Nile and 43 confirmed cases of equine encephalitis reported to our office," said Stacy. The 43 confirmed cases of EEE in Louisiana are almost double the 26 cases reported by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) as of September 4, 2012. In 2011, there were three confirmed EEE cases and no cases of WNV in Louisiana. "We are urging horse owners to contact their veterinarians to develop an appropriate vaccination protocol for their horses, or to at least boost against WNV and EEE," Stacy added. Said Angela M. Pelzel, DVM, a Western regional epidemiologist with APHIS, "the EEE and WEE vaccine is marketed and sold by feed stores (and other outlets) and can be purchased in the U.S. without a prescription, so it is legal for owners to give that vaccine themselves." That said, "Vaccination is preferably done by a veterinarian so that the vaccination can be properly recorded," Pelzel noted. The reason for this surge of EEE cases is not yet clear. Scott Weese, DVM, DVSc, Dipl. ACVIM, a professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph's Ontario Veterinary College noted, "It's hard to say why EEE has these cycles. Hurricanes help by providing more breeding grounds (flooded areas) for mosquitoes, especially because the main EEE mosquito vectors tend to like brackish water. Beyond that, whether it's changes in cycling in birds or other mosquito factors is hard to say. There are many diseases that have unpredictable trends that occur over years." EEE case numbers can be monitored online through the USDA.
I don't know since I am not a vet.. I am guessing the reason these horses are sick is because they are NOT vaccinated at all, rather than having more mosquitoes than normal.. and what it really shows is that people are not spending the money to vaccinate... I doubt it is because they don't care, but more likely because they don't have the money and are forced to cut corners.
It would be nice for one of the pharmaceutical companies to step in and offer low cost vaccines to the vets there...That would offer a win-win situation for the horse owners, more importantly the horses, and in the long term the pharmaceutical companies... just my two cents worth.

General Horse Information / Horse Information / West Nile Virus Article

Great Article in The Sun Sentinnel.....
South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com Euthanized Loxahatchee horse had West Nile virus, officials say 11:40 PM EDT, September 11, 2012
The death of a horse in Loxahatchee from West Nile virus has county officials concerned about the spread of the mosquito-borne disease in the wake of Isaac's flooding.
People should be cautious, but not fearful, said Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Health Department.
"It was locally acquired," O'Connor said of the virus that killed the horse. "There is some concern — we haven't seen a horse case in many years."
Adding to the concern is the recent severe outbreak of West Nile in West Texas, which had killed 48 people as of Monday — the worst ever in that state. O'Connor said there is always the chance of an outbreak, especially when the mosquito population increases, as it often does after tropical storms.
"The virus is going to blow east," O'Connor said. "We just don't know when."
Mosquitoes are known to carry the virus and infect humans — and since Isaac dumped as much as 22 inches of rain over parts of Palm Beach County, the mosquito population is expected to increase.
But the virus doesn't originate with mosquitoes — it's carried by birds, which are immune to West Nile sickness.
After mosquitoes contract the virus from feeding on infected birds, they can then bite humans and other animals to spread the virus. In rare cases, West Nile has been spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, breast feeding and even during pregnancy from the mother to the child.
A simple touch or kiss can not spread the virus.
About 28 cases have been reported in Florida this year. Since 2001, there have been eight cases of West Nile in Palm Beach County, two of which were locally acquired while Broward County last saw a West Nile case in 2010.
On Sept. 4, The Centers for Disease Control said state health departments had reported 1,993 cases — the highest number recorded through the first week in September since the virus was discovered in the United States in 1999.
More than 70 percent of the cases have been reported from six states — Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Michigan — and almost 45 percent of all cases have been reported from Texas, the CDC reported.
With more than 100 species of mosquitoes, it's hard to determine what sparks a West Nile outbreak, said Dr. Roxanne Connolly, a professor of Medical Entomology at the University of Florida.
"There's really no way to predict an outbreak," Connelly said. "The conditions have to be right at the right time."
"Florida residents are certainly still at risk," Connelly said. "That's one of the things about Florida — you will always live with insects."
The symptoms of West Nile are a bit tricky — because approximately 80 percent of people infected will not show any symptoms.
About one in 150 people infected with West Nile becomes seriously ill. Severe symptoms include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.
The effects of a serious West Nile case could last several weeks, while neurological damage could be permanent, the CDC says.
Florida residents can prevent the chance of mosquito bites by draining standing water around the home and covering doors and windows with screens.
Though it may be tough in the Florida heat, Connelly said, long-sleeved shorts and long pants could help prevent mosquito bites. Wearing bug repellents laced with DEET is a good alternative to wearing long clothes, Connelly said.
Staying indoors also helps — air conditioning creates unfavorable conditions for mosquitoes.
Health Department officials say horse owners can protect their animals by keeping vaccinations and boosters renewed. West Nile infection is preventable in vaccinated horses — but there is no vaccine for humans, dogs or cats.

Adriana, you can buy animal grade DE at Red Barn.. it works great.. if you look at even the fly feed through products, a main ingredient is DE.... what I don't know, if you only treat your horse's pasture, if it can withstand/hold off the ants that come in from the untreated areas.
Antec costs $100 for the first acre and then I think $20 for every acre after that.. they come and treat twice a year.. animal safe.. no ants, guaranteed.. it takes 30 days for their product to really kick in.. it will be the best money you can spend... DE I think is $1/lb.. so you can do the math...

Unfortunately, there are too many journalists that are biased and slant reports' language or tone to what they presume to be the next big "read".....rather than being factual about anything... Anybody that uses the word "strange" in conjunction with dressage riding, has no credibility in my view... Perhaps the differentiator is that a real journalist reports real facts and information and the "other" type of "journalist wannabe" writes about stories that have no informational value.
Just sayin'

Actually it doesn't work that way.. it's all about weight. when I feed square bales, I do not measure by pad, but rather how much hay, weightwise, a horse is suppose to have a day.. that number determines how many pads (by weight on average) are fed.
50 lb bale of hay at $15 800 lb bale of hay at $110
Easy enough to figure out the cost per pound. That's when you see the economics of scale.
The guys that are fed off the round bales, get as much hay as we can push into the corner of the stall and stack it high as possible.
Hope that helps.

Well, space for two rolls at a time is not ideal... when you don't free choice and you have room in your garage, then just pull off the bale and bring it to your storage space.. as far as what type of container.. not sure what to tell you.. since it's hay, probably a big sheet tied together so you dont' get hay everywhere.. it will take some time getting used to it, but it's doable... I store mine in my feed room..but I have room for the whole roll and then just pull off that and put it in the feed cart.. If you do end up doing this, then make sure you store your round bale flat side down so it's easier to pull off the layers...
Hope that helps... Ingrid

From today's Post....
Authorities: Wellington horse had encephalitis, warn public to take mosquito precautions
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
State and local health authorities are warning residents to take particular precaution to avoid mosquitoes after confirming that Eastern Equine Encephalitis is active in Palm Beach County.
This morning state agriculture officials confirmed that a sick horse that was put down in Wellington last week was suffering from Eastern Equine Encephalitis and the mosquito that transmits this virus has been found in local traps.
The virus, referred to as EEEV, is one of a group of viruses that is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause inflammation of the brain.
The mosquito that carries this virus is generally not found in South Florida, preferring the deep swamps to our north, said Palm Beach County Health Department spokesman Tim O’Connor.
When horses in the county come down with this illness, they generally have been infected while traveling out of the area, but the Wellington case happened in an unvaccinated horse that had not traveled in the month before becoming sick, reported Dr. Mary Echols of the state’s Department of Health.
This year in Florida, there have been eight horses and 14 sentinel chickens infected with the virus in 10 counties, according to the state’s press release this morning.
No human in the state was infected with EEEV in 2011, according to the department of health, but four people were infected in 2010. Those cases were reported in Hillsborough, Wakulla and Leon counties.
But EEEV isn’t the only mosquito borne illness. In 2011, 24 people were diagnosed with West Nile Virus they acquired while in Florida and seven people acquired dengue - two of those cases originated in Palm Beach County.
While horse can easily, and cheaply, be vaccinated against the illness, no vaccination exists for humans. The time between being bitten and when the illness begins ranges from four to 10 days, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Some people may never show sign of infection while others will be stricken with symptoms including chills, fever, headache and vomitting. The illness can last two to three weeks. The CDC reports about one third of all people with EEE die from it.
The heavy rains across the county and all of South Florida may signal a jump in the mosquito population as their eggs hatch in standing water.
“Residents and visitors need to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites,” Palm Beach County Health Department Director Dr. Alina Alonso said.
No person in Palm Beach County has ever died from EEEV, O’Connor noted.
The county’s Division of Mosquito Control is scheduled to begin an aerial assault on the insects Monday at sundown, covering 270,000 acres west of Military Trail from Jupiter to Boca Raton and in the Glades.
Palm Beach Gardens officials have also announced plans to spray at dusk July 2 , 3 and 5.

Wellington sends manure rules back to drawing board
Vote (0)By Mitra Malek
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wellington — An ordinance aimed at tightening rules for storage and disposal of manure and livestock waste failed this week.
The proposed measure, which the village council had initially approved on June 12, seemed onerous for the public, several council members said when they voted to send it back the village’s Equestrian Preserve Committee for review.
The new rules called for covering manure bins, even with something as simple as a tarp, while also requiring them to be at least 100 feet from any public body of water or any drainage system with direct discharge to a public body of water.
“Isn’t that a bit of overkill?” Vice Mayor Howard Coates said. “I think we’re unduly burdening the small equestrian lot owners.”
Councilwoman Anne Gerwig also cast doubt on the dual requirement.
“We’re like a bathtub,” responded Mike O’Dell, Wellington’s project director for its Equestrian Master Plan. “Everything ends up in our cs.”
If someone forgets to cover a bin then the extra distance is an added layer of protection, he said.
The failed ordinance updated standards that the village first put into effect in 2000 to reduce phosphorus. Fertilizer and manure have phosphorus, which can cause environmental problems for the state’s waterways.
Conservatively, Wellington’s equestrian community produces at least 50,000 tons of horse manure annually, according to a staff report. That’s enough manure to spread one-foot thick over 135 acres. If bedding is added to the equation, the waste amount roughly doubles, the report said.
The ordinance also called for haulers to keep records showing where they are getting waste from and to which locations they are delivering it. Wellington would have been able to audit those records.
Equestrian Preserve Committee member Michael Whitlow asked the council to send the proposal back to his board for review. Meanwhile, the committee had already recommended approval of the measure.
But the ordinance had been presented to members in a “casual manner,” and the committee had spent little time discussing it, Whitlow said. “This was done very rapidly. I have almost zero recollection of it.”
Despite the council’s decision to let the committee review the proposed measure again, Whitlow’s comment raised some eyebrows on the dais.
“I hate to hear someone say they didn’t understand what they voted on,” Councilman Matt Willhite said. “I don’t think this is a good precedent to set.”

From WPTV Web Site:
Two children on a trail ride were injured when a horse got spooked and other horses followed.
The children were thrown from their animals and fell about 4 and a half feet.
They were wearing helmets and are not believed to be seriously hurt. But they were taken to a hospital to be checked out.
The horses belong to Equestrians First Place in Royal Palm Beach.
It's suspected that one of the riders shifted in the wrong direction and that's what spooked the first horse to begin galloping.
Some of the animals suffered ses.

For those of you that don't know yet, Palms West Animal Hospital just changed their hours from 8 - 8 M-Sat and 8 - 3 on Sunday to 24/7!
Had to take two of my dogs recently for different things and I just love the place and the staff. Very caring.. very reasonabily priced and accommodating with appointment times.
They invested in a variety of new and additional clinic equipment including a digital x ray machine that is read immediately at the clinic... so I am just passing on the word and the hours... no more trecking East on North Lake and Forrest Hill for the late night emergencies... there is a clinic right here in town on Folsom Road.
Check them out and support your local business!!!!

PS: I heard Dr. Brennan stitched an eyelid on a donkey's eye last week... he is one of the vets there!!! nice work.
